Central Florida Buggy Club

There was a large turnout of eager drivers at the planning meeting on Aug. 21 at Golden Corral in Zephyrhills. It was fun to reconnect with friends that we have not seen over the summer months. Everyone had ideas for the new driving season. It was quickly discovered there are not enough weekends in the months to attend all the suggested places to drive. We are so fortunate to live in an area with so many driving opportunities. In addition to our state parks and state forest, we have properties of water management program.

Sharon Flack called the meeting to order and quickly had us down to business decisions.

 1. Rob Ausborn has volunteered for the past several years to build and maintain the website to distribute news and pictures of the CFBC events. Due to increasing demands of his day job, Rob has limited time for updating the site. This job is labor intensive and time consuming. Members voted to have the website hosted by Tim Trott at the Florida Horse Page. The monthly updates will cost $10 and the space available for pictures is limited.

2. Judie Williams has established a CFBC Scrapbook. She is very creative in her display of pictures. Everyone enjoyed seeing the crazy adventures of our club events. A big THANKS to Judie for all her work.

Volunteers like Judie and Rob keep the fun in this club.

3. Club Tee Shirts – Discussed need for more club logo tee shirts – Shirts can be ordered from Mark Hammett – 352 754-9214

4. A vote was taken to hold an annual planning meeting each year.

5. Sharon provided a short update on the Horse Barn at Alafia River State Park. Volunteers of the park have formed a Citizens Support Organization. This Non Profit/ Tax Deductible / 501 3C is holding the $6,000 that has been raised for the barn. The barn will be built in two stages. First as a simple pole barn and then as funds are donated the stalls will be added. Remember all materials and labor must be provided by volunteers. The state is unable to provide any funding for this project.

6. Members were asked to renew dues for this driving season. The cost will remain at $15 Per family.

7. Thanks for all the volunteers that agreed to host a drive or event. Your support keeps things rolling.

Announcements -

Linda and Bob Freist – will host their annual Christmas party on Dec. 18./Saturday at their home in Wesley Chapel. This event grows each year and they need more volunteers. Linda asked club members to bring ponies / horses and give kids buggy rides. She also needs non horse volunteers to help with kids and games. Linda # 813 973-1599

Season Kick Off Party – Drive at Lake Townsend Park – Sept. 25, 2010

Our first drive of the season will be at Lake Townsend Park on Hwy #476 on Sept, 25. Saturday. Drives will met at 9AM and drive out at 9:30.

This park has cool tree shaded trails with good footing and it is fly free. Drivers will have access gates unlocked in order to get your buggy into the driving area. The trails winding trails are scenic and are good for a leisure drive. You can choose your own length of drive because the trails loop around and it is easy to go back to the trailhead. Driver will go to the Riverside/ Nobleton Restaurant along the Rails to Trails or pack up their horse and buggy and trailer the short distance to the restaurant. Many of us will be super full after ordering the huge Nobleton Burger. This club loves to eat and drive. If your equine is not ready for the trails, just join us for lunch and some fun.

Directions- From Hwy #41 north of Brooksville. Turn East on to Hwy 476 . The Lake Townsend Park is located on the North side of 476 / Look for a small brown sign – indicating the Trailhead for Withlacoochee Rails to Trails/ which is Lake Townsend Park From the inSouth interstate !-75 get off the Brooksville exit #301 and go east on HWY #50 – go one mile to stop light Croom Rital Road. Turn north on Croom Rital. Go about 5 miles/ paved road comes to a Y – at Croom Forest and Nobleton Rd./ AKA Riverside Dr.

Go north on Nobleton Rd. / past Post Office to Stop sign at HWY 476 /Turn Left and go about 1 mile/ Park is located on the right.

Ladies Labor Day Outing -

Club members, Ann White, Marcia Southall, and Sharon Flack spent Sunday morning clearing the trails at Lake Townsend. The group was assisted by pony mule Angel and beautiful Chantilly/ Gloria Jordan’s Tilly.

The all girl team was successful in removing large logs off the trail. Thanks to Marcia and her powerful chain saw. The equines were very calm in waiting for Marcia cut the trees and they would pull them off the trail. We did leave a few fun jumps for our woods drivers. The trails are now clear and ready for your enjoyment on Sept.25

Club members and friends arrived on Friday night for a fun filled weekend at Fecthel Ranch, Lower Wekvia State Park near Deland. On Friday night the rain came down, the wind howled and shook the trailers. The horses didn’t mind because they were very comfortable in the stalls. The sky was clear on Saturday and more day drivers arrived to join us for a woods drive. The buggies were decorated with hearts for the Valentine theme. The horses (VSE to Draft Mules) were adorned with red beads and heart pendants. We knew this was going to be a great drive because we had two Angels (one white mini and one white pony mule) along with us. Sue had her mini Angel wearing a red feather boa for Valentine’s Day. As we traveled down the trials, little red feathers fell off the boa. Someone called this our RedNeck GPS. We had fun spotting the red markers on the way back to camp. In addition to this GPS we had great  trail bosses Judy (riding Arab/ Ernie) and Georganna (riding Peruvian Paso/Zoro).  They ride at this park weekly and knew where to avoid the deep water and plowed/ fire break /horse trails. Everyone was in awe of the wonderful unspoiled Florida landscape. The native palm trees and wild magnolia flourished along these trails. It seemed that we could have been back in the 1800’s exploring Florida. The trails have several low water crossings. The depth of the water crossing is much greater when you have the view of a VSE/very small equine.  Max was driving a pair of minis hitched to a mini easy entry cart. She placed her feet on the dash as they ford the creek crossing. The pair willing crossed but the water came up to their bellies. Needless to say that Max got her shoes and other parts of her clothing very wet. Fellow drivers offered her the use of a raincoat for the next water obstacle.

This was a fast pace drive that someone equated it to Speed Dating. I don’t know if it was the cold weather or the wind that made this a fast drive. But, I think it began when Max moved out front with her pair of minis/ Chip and Sassy. Max said we were going too slow and she was tired of holding her team back. The fearless little guys flew down the trail and only the occasional muddy spot would slow them down.  They kept a good pace for the entire 7 mile drive. And they were willing to lead us again on Sunday. We met a mini paint donkey named Hambone driving along on the trail. He was with his owner Janette and her daughter Jessica. They joined our group and Hambone had a blast with trying to keep up with the other minis.

On Saturday night, Georganna fixed a huge pot of spaghetti filled with meatballs and sausage. Everyone else provided the wonderful side dishes and of course desserts. The sweets were enjoyed over cups of hot chocolate and coffee around a warm campfire. Sue provided the entertainment by telling jokes that sparked laughter from the campers.

Sunday traditional big break feast was in full swing by 8AM -  Virg was cooking the Cowboy Breakfast, Ernie was making the bacon and eggs, and Connie was cooking Belgian Waffles. This is what camping is all about! Additional food was brought in and consumed. It took us a little longer to get ready for driving.

Connie and Ernie went out to explore some trails on their own. Ernie was driving Toby/ Halflinger hitched to a four wheeled cart and Connie had Kate Mule hitched to a two wheeled buggy. They encountered a large area of deep mud and decided to turn around. Ernie was very surprised of Toby’s ability and willingness to back the heavy cart through the mud and then calmly side pass to make the turn around. It is times like these that make us appreciate the strength and training of our equines. Ernie was able to return to camp with clean boots and only had to wash the mud off the buggy wheels and Toby’s feet.

If you have not been to Fecthel Ranch recently, you will notice a big improvement in the facilities and trails. This is all due to our winter volunteers/ camp hosts Louise and Greg Mayor. The first change you will notice the road into the park is freshly graded and free of potholes.  Greg requests that you ride your horse along the trial beside the road in order to keep it smooth. Next, stop at the bathroom and you will find it clean and fully supplied with paper, soap, and towels.  The barn is kept in good repair and the stalls are very clean. The trails have been reopened and are free of debris. Most of these trails have been impassable for years since the hurricanes blew down trees across the trails. We went down a trail that in which a huge tree had been blown down from the Friday night wind. It was reported to Greg and he jumped on the tractor to pull it from the trail.

Please tell Greg and Louise, how much you appreciate their work. Remember these are volunteers and we hope they will return next winter.

 

Sunshine Raceway

Our club was invited to the Sunshine Raceway/Trotter Track in Zephryhills to show the spectators our type of driving. Sharon drove BJ / Racking horse/ hitched to a two wheel aluminum  woods buggy. Virg drove Babe/ Halflinger / hitched to his two wheel aluminum cart  with USA flags flying on the back. Buttons /Jack Russell/ was Virg’s passenger and navigator. Sharon B—. drove Peggy Sue/ Paint Halflinger  / hitched to a four wheeled competition cart. We paraded up and down the track while the announcer told the audience about our turnouts and club functions Virg told me to pick up the pace and show them how fast we can go. Even at our fastest trot, we looked like turtles compared to their pony trotters. Everyone had fun and several people came over to learn more about our club and our horses.

The tenth annual Mobstacle held on January 17, was a successful event in obtaining $425.00 in donations toward the Horse Barn at Alafia River State Park. This event was sponsored by the newly formed community support organization, “Friends of Alafia River State Park”. Members of the Myakka River Riders, Triple B, Central Florida Buggy Club, Florida Whips, and the general public came out to show their support for the Alafia Barn Project. This year the Mobstacle event was open for rider competition. The riders and drivers explored the beautiful trails together and everyone had a learning experience. Some participants found it difficult to navigate the trail map but they were quickly redirected to the correct path. Some very small (VSE-AKA Mini) equines enjoyed the water obstacle / which was created by the over night heavy rain. Rosemary’s Prince decided to lay down in the creek crossing- TWICE. Snuggles the dog, was tucked under the driver’s seat and got very cool wet feet. Snuggles did not complain, he was just glad to be out on the trail. Participants found questions along the trail about our Florida State Parks and their recreational opportunities.  Park Manager, Coy Helms joined in on the fun to have a different view of the park. He was a passenger/ groom for Connie Boyette, driving Kate (Huge Draft Mule) hitched to a four wheeled wagon. Coy was very resourceful in answering all the questions without having to reference the park guide. He learned that it is sometimes difficult handle a head strong mule.

Riders and drivers kept fun in the Obstacle challenge. Some horses balked at the mailboxes, some did not like the back up box, but not one complained about the carrot/ apple obstacle.

Upon crossing the finish line, the horses were quickly tended to, and everyone gathered for a wonderful lunch. It included grilled cheeseburgers, chips, baked mac and cheese, coleslaw, pound cake and soda. The winners / closest to the secret time / included: Short Distance Drivers- 1^st place Rosemary Meredith / Prince, 2^nd place Nancy Slater/Fancy,    3^rd place Francine Lucas/Bella,   Short Distance Riders- 1^st place Trudi Jo Canter/ Sonny, 2^nd place Mariam Lauer/ CT, 3^rd place Mary Lou Sapp/Maverick. Long Distance Drivers-  1^st place Connie Boyette / Mule Kate, 2^ndplace Carol Gregg/Shots of Moonshine 3^rd place Becky Card Swerdloff/ Hershey   / Long Distance Riders- 1^st place Johnie Jamison/Zorro 2^nd place Deborah White/Zante,  3^rd place tie between Cathy Slusser/Tucker and Andrea Mosier/Indy.

The Central Fla. Buggy Club was off to a great driving season in 2009 and is even better in 2010. The group met at Oleno/ River Rise in High Springs for a Christmas Drive celebration. We shared the barn and facilities with some great people from the Santa Fa River Riders. The barn was full with equines with the holiday spirit. Members of our buggy group were layered with warm clothing. I don’t know if it was due to the cold  weather or the  idea that we were playing Topless Bingo. We invited our riders to join us in the game but they declined. Saturday morning started with rain and the game was moved into the barn aisle. It did not dampen our spirits as we played Topless Barn Bingo. Ernie volunteered to be the caller. The cards were passed out with the top letters (BINGO) were cut off. Ernie was instructed to not call out the letter of the bingo numbers. This game was more difficult than it sounds. The game continued until everyone was a winner. It was determined that Connie and Caroline should go out to buy a lottery ticket because they were the most frequent winners. Ruth and Georganna were the last winners and they were advised never to play the lottery. The horses enjoyed the company in the barn and benefited from all the treats. The players warmed up to cups of coffee and hot apple cider. The rain stopped and everyone went out for a drive. Buggies were decorated with Christmas garland and bells. Drivers put on stocking hats and hummed a few Christmas carols (no one could remember all the words).  If this does not get you into the Christmas spirit then nothing will. The group had considered going to the High Spring Christmas parade but the rain started again. We decided to sit around the roaring campfire and raise the umbrella when a shower came through. I think it is the campfire light that brings on some great story telling. One phrase I heard was “ When I was young I started out with Nothing. And now, I have most of it left.”

New Years Drive – we have some very hardy campers in our group. Several drivers were out in the cold at Green Swamp West / ready to ring in the New Year.  I was not among them but they tell me it was a lot of fun.

Alafia Barn Benefit a Big Success

 

Riders and drivers came from all areas of the state to support the barn project at Alafia River State Park. The Myakka River Riders of Southwest Florida area was well represented. Myakka River Riders are the first club to make a major contribution to the barn fund. The $500.00 donation has moved the project from the pole barn stage to the horse barn/completion date Fall/2010. The club is qualified to have two permanent plaques placed in the barn to signify their support to the barn project. It is hoped that other area clubs will match this donation. Several private donations were also made on this day. The entire event brought in over $2000. This includes the proceeds from the Gift Card Raffle and used tack sale.

All the riders were winners of a beautiful day as they explored the winding trails in the Alafia River State Park. Upon their return, they enjoyed grilled hamburgers with all the fixings, bake beans, potato salad, chips, and beverage. Several participants also won nice door prizes.

Connie Boyette compiled a stack of donated gift cards

(Valued at over $230.00) to local business and restaurants. She has been selling raffle tickets for the past 3 months. The drawing was held on Saturday and the winner was Ms. Diane Popovice.

The Park Manager, Coy Helms was on duty to welcome everyone to the event and to inform us about the newly formed Community Support Organization. The Friends of Alafia River State Park is one of the faster forming groups in the park service. This is due to the hard working officers on the board and the dedication of park staff. This working club will be the vehicle for completing volunteer projects and to receive tax deductable contributions to finance the projects. You are encouraged to join the CSO to show your support and willingness to work for the enjoyment of the park.

10th Annual Carriage Mobstacle Drive and Ride

at Alafia River State Park

January 17, 2010

 

A mobstacle is a combination of a driving marathon and an obstacle course. It is a timed event but it is not a race. The winners will be determined by the drivers and riders coming closest to the Secret Optimum Time. During the marathon you will be able to explore some of the most beautiful driving trails in our state park system. The grassy trails provide easy-going footing for your equine. The trails will have some fun challenges with rolling hills and small creek crossings. You will encounter both natural trail obstacles and man made obstacles. This year, we have included obstacles for the riders. Please keep the fun in this event. Use trail manners and safe driving practices at all times. Helmets are suggested. Horseback riders must yield to the carriages. Riders under 16 years of age must wear a helmet.

Marathon Part

To get started you must select your course distance. Short course (3 to 4 miles) or Long course (8 to 9 miles). The theme of this drive is “Exploring Florida State Parks”. Along the mapped course, you will search for information that relates to our state parks recreational opportunities. This information must be turned in at the end of the drive to validate that you were following the course. Please make sure your starting time and return time is noted by the timer.

Obstacle Part

Upon completing the marathon, you will go to the obstacle course.  The eight obstacles should be attempted but do not have to be completed. We want to keep the fun and saftey in this event. If your equine has a problem with an obstacle, just move on to the next obstacle (there will be no penalty). Your time in the obstacle course will be added to the marathon time.

This event will be a fundraiser for the 12 stall barn in the camping area at Alafia River State Park(completion date/ Fall 2010). Your $20.00 registration/donation (under 18 yrs./ $10.donation) will include park entry fees, great lunch, beverage, fun and chance to win great door prizes. Governor Crist Signs Bill Increasing Equestrian Safety for Youth

 “Nicole’s Law” promotes safety of children under 16 who participate in equestrian activities

LOXAHATCHEE – Governor Charlie Crist today signed House Bill 169, “Nicole’s Law.” The legislation creates safety standards to minimize the number of serious or fatal head injuries to Florida youth sustained during equestrian activities and recreation.

“Today I am proud to sign legislation that will help ensure the safety of Florida’s children and prevent serious injuries that otherwise could have been prevented,” said Governor Crist. “I applaud our Legislature for taking action to protect Florida’s future leaders.”

“Nicole’s Law” is named for Nicole Hornstein, a 12-year-old girl from Loxahatchee who died after being thrown from a horse in June 2006. This legislation creates safety measures for children who participate in equestrian activities and recreation. It requires a child under age 16 to wear a helmet that meets the current standards of the American Society of Testing and Materials for protective headgear.

Sponsored by Representative Joseph Abruzzo and Senator Dave Aronberg, “Nicole’s Law” applies to children age 16 and younger who are:

Riding on a public roadway or right-of-way.
Riding on a public equestrian trail, public recreation trail, public park, public preserve or public school site.
Riding on any other publicly owned or controlled property.

“Nicole’s Law” does not apply to children under age 16 who are riding while:

Practicing for, riding to or from, or competing or performing in, shows or events such as rodeos and parades where helmets are not historically a part of the show or event.
Riding on privately owned land even if the land is occasionally separated by a public road or right-of-way that must be crossed.
Engaged in an agricultural practice or pursuit.

Governor Crist signed the legislation at Hamlin Park, a seven-acre equestrian park, in Loxahatchee. Nicole’s father and mother Gary and Monique Hornstein, as well as two sisters, attended the bill signing ceremony.
